2 (beautiful!) bulletin board hacks for your home officefeatured
I love office supplies. Like, really, really love/get excited for/in a past life used to hoard- office supplies. And a well-placed bulletin board? It’s akin to having an extremely organized administrative assistant there to remind you of upcoming luncheons and occasionally yell out things like “But the Myers account!” (Clearly I’ve had hundreds of office jobs.)
That said, I’m not a huge fan of white board, cork, particle board framing, or anything else that makes me feel like I’m earning $7/hour and typing data entry.
SO. Here are my two favorite bulletin board hacks that merge pretty and professional- no motivational posters required.
Bulletin Board Hack #1: Refurbished framed canvas
The kiddos like to call this one “upcycling,” but I prefer the term “can be done on the cheap.” Got a fave secondhand store nearby? You can probably source the whole darned project there.
You’ll need:
- A framed canvas (Focus on finding a frame you like. Ugly/damaged painted canvas inside? PERFECT.)
- Any fabric you’d like to see on a regular basis
- Hot glue gun (and glue!)
- Staple gun (can swap out for a hammer and small nails)
Here’s what to do:
Turn the frame over and carefully remove the staples holding the canvas in place. Put frame aside.
Stretching out the fabric of your choice, put the canvas face-down and pull fabric sides in, holding edges tightly and folding to the back of the canvas. (It’s like you’re wrapping the world’s ugliest present!)
Hot glue the folds of the fabric onto the back of the canvas to keep it taut. Let cool.
When dry, put the fabric canvas back into the frame and secure it with staples or tiny nails in the back of the frame.
Hang up your masterpiece! (Missing the hanging wire from your frame? In a pinch, a can tab screwed to the back of the frame works exceptionally well for hanging stuff!)
Depending on canvas quality, either use pushpins or- my personal favorite- hot glue decorative clothespins onto your new bulletin board to hold paper, artwork, take out menus…the sky’s the limit!
(Well, that, and your hot glue supply.)
Bulletin Board Hack #2: Ribbon-hung dry erase gallery
This wholly satisfying series of dry erase boards is startlingly easy. Like, you’re already staring at the stuff you need for this one. What are you waiting for?
You’ll need:
- Picture frames, any size
- Spray paint, any color you dig (optional!)
- Light-colored paper or gift wrap (I used a white, slightly croc-patterned wrapping paper and can’t even begin to tell you how cool it looks)
- Scissors
- Ribbon, any color
- Hot glue gun/glue
- A hammer and as many nails as you have frames
- Dry erase markers
Here’s what to do:
Separate backing from frames. (If spray-painting, lay frames outside and give a coat or two of your preferred color. Let dry.)
Cut paper or gift wrap to the desired frame size and pop it into the frame like a photo. Reassemble frames and place face-down.
Cut a six-inch ribbon for each dry erase board and, using the hot glue, secure a loop on the back of each frame, right up towards the top.
Let dry, and hang each ribbon loop by a nail, creating a well-spaced gallery of spots for inspirational notes-to-self.
“Hang in there, kitten” is a classic for a reason.
Dig ‘em? Where would you put these?
